There is a long list of weird things we do as yogis. But all these weird things serve a healing purpose. Today’s topic of weird things we do is oil pulling.
Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic technique in which oil is swished around in your mouth for 20 minutes. I know, you are asking yourself ‘why?’. The premise is that oil pulling is a practice which is highly beneficial for overall health. The oil works to kills bacteria in your mouth and improves overall mouth hygiene, which improves the health of the entire body, because ya know, everything is connected to everything else. Ayurveda claims that this practice is so powerful that it can cure various diseases, with consistency.
Still not buying it? From a personal perspective, my twice-yearly dental cleanings are proving the benefits because I always get glowing reviews from my hygienist, who is convinced that I must floss twice a day (I don’t).
It is also said oil pulling can contribute to fresher breath, fewer cavities, and whiter teeth. Tell me, who doesn’t want all of those things?
Here’s how you oil pull:
1. Put a tablespoon or so of oil in your mouth (coconut, sesame, or olive).
2. Swish around your mouth. It is recommended that you swish for 15 to 20 minutes. If this seems impossible the first few times you try, aim for just a minute or two, and build up the amount of time you can swish.
3. Spit oil out in a toilet or trashcan, not your sink (it can clog your drain over time).
4. Rinse your mouth with warm water.
We recommend that you buy a high quality, organic oil from a reputable source. You can find any of these oils at your local health food store. Give a swish and let us know how you enjoy the benefits of oil pulling!
